Do I Matter? Understanding Your Value Through God's Eyes
One of the deepest questions every human being wrestles with is simple yet profound: "Do I matter?" This question follows us through every stage of life, manifesting differently as we grow and change.
How We Ask "Do I Matter?" Throughout Life
Children ask this question through seeking attention - wanting to be noticed, hoping not to be picked last in games. Teenagers wrestle with it through identity formation, wondering where they fit in and who their people are. Adults often ask it through achievement, measuring their worth by accomplishments and success. Older generations question it through legacy, wondering if what they leave behind will have lasting impact.
We typically operate from one of two internal scripts: either "Do I matter?" or "I matter more than others." Neither perspective is healthy, and both stem from the same root issue - trying to determine our value through external measures rather than understanding our inherent worth.

What Culture Says About Your Value
The world offers countless answers about where your value comes from. Culture tells us our worth is determined by:
- Accomplishments and achievements
- Physical appearance
- Popularity and social status
- Productivity and performance
- Platform and influence
- How we compare to others
The Biblical Foundation: You Were Created Intentionally
Scripture reveals a radically different perspective. Before God ever asked humanity to accomplish anything - before Adam and Eve worked, led, built, succeeded, or even failed - He declared them valuable.
"God saw all that he made, and it was very good" - Genesis 1:31
This wasn't just "good" - it was "very good." Everything God created has purpose, meaning, and value. This changes everything because if your worth comes from God, it cannot be taken away by human opinion.

The Hebrew Word "Berea"
The first season of life is built around the Hebrew word "berea," meaning creation - bringing something into existence intentionally, not accidentally or randomly. You're alive because God decided your life mattered.
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them" - Genesis 1:27

Three Foundational Truths About Your Creation
1. God Created You Intentionally
The biblical creation account is unique among all creation narratives. Unlike other ancient stories where humans are afterthoughts created to serve lazy gods, Scripture presents humanity as the crowning jewel of creation. You were created in God's image, which means you uniquely reflect aspects of His character - creativity, relationship capacity, morality, and spiritual design.
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" - Ephesians 2:10
The word "handiwork" literally means masterpiece. You are God's masterpiece - a one-off creation, hand-crafted with intention. Just as a Picasso's value comes from its creator, not its materials, your value comes from who made you, not what you've accomplished.

2. God Sees What Others Cannot See
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" - Psalm 139:13-14
God works in hidden spaces where nobody applauds or notices. Throughout Scripture, He specializes in hidden beginnings:

- Moses was discovered hidden in a basket
- David was overlooked in the fields while his brothers were presented as potential kings
- Esther hid her heritage before becoming queen
- Jesus was born in a stable rather than a palace
3. God Created You for This Season
You're not alive in this generation by accident. "From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands" - Acts 17:26
God knew your personality, strengths, weaknesses, family situation, and the opportunities and challenges of this time period. He still chose to place you here, now. Your existence carries an assignment - you were created to impact your family, relationships, workplace, church, and community by being an image bearer of your Creator.

The Foundation Changes Everything
Understanding that you're created in God's image means:
You don't begin life trying to earn worth - you begin life already carrying it. The same God who spoke creation into existence also speaks purpose over your life.
- For children: You matter because you exist, not because of what you achieve
- For teenagers: Identity is received from God, not constructed from culture
- For adults: Success is a terrible substitute for identity
- For older generations: Value doesn't disappear with age

Life Application
This week, stop defining yourself primarily by what you do, what you earn, what others think of you, how you compare, or what you've accomplished. Instead, remember whose image you carry.
When you struggle with feeling like you don't matter, or when you feel superior to others, pray this prayer: "I'm created by you, Lord. My value comes from you. I am your image bearer."
Questions for reflection:
Remember: before God ever asked anything from you, He wanted you. Before He formed your purpose, He established your value. You matter not because of what you do, but because of whose you are.

Questions for reflection:
- Where am I currently seeking validation and worth outside of my identity as God's creation?
- How would my daily decisions change if I truly believed I was God's masterpiece?
- What would it look like for me to live as an image bearer of God in my current circumstances?
- How can I help others around me understand their inherent value as God's creation?
Remember: before God ever asked anything from you, He wanted you. Before He formed your purpose, He established your value. You matter not because of what you do, but because of whose you are.
